Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

~ Matthew 7:7-8

What’s in a Prayer?

All of us long to connect with someone who can identify with our circumstances and share in our day-to-day life. Prayer is just that - a personal experience and intimate connection with our loving Heavenly Father.  Jesus set the perfect example of obedience in prayer.  Although His day was filled from morning to night with many pressures and responsibilities - addressing crowds, healing the sick, traveling, and training His disciples - He made prayer a top priority.  If Jesus was so dependent upon His fellowship in prayer alone with His Father, how much more you and I should spend time alone with God.

Daily prayer gives us an opportunity to share all aspects of our lives with God, gives us the chance to express our gratitude for the things He provides.  It’s the platform for confessing our sins and asking for help in overcoming those sins as well as an act of worship and obedience. Daily prayer is a way to acknowledge who is really in control of our lives.

Why is prayer important?

For followers of Jesus Christ, prayer is the best way to communicate with God. Prayer is the vehicle for daily dialog with the One who created us. The importance of daily communication through prayer cannot be underestimated. It is so important that it is mentioned over 250 times in Scripture.

When we pray, God listens to us. When we don’t pray, God feels left out of our lives. “He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9b). As you pray consistently, you are affirming the existence of God in your life. You are building your faith as you see God’s hand do His mighty work on your behalf just because you asked.

Prayer is something that we all should want to do on a daily basis. Yet for many Christians it can be a challenge to humble one’s self in daily prayer. Whether one is a new believer or an established one, prayer should always be considered the best way to speak to God. Imagine not speaking to a loved one or a close friend. How long would the relationship last? Daily prayer with God is daily fellowship with our Heavenly Father. It is truly amazing that God would want to have fellowship with us at all. In fact, the psalmist asks, “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:4). Daily prayer is a good way to understand this incredible truth and the marvelous privilege God has given us.
